Bushmaster Capital of Peru

Night encounter with bushmaster (Lachesis muta) – Otorongo Expeditions, Amazon river lodge Peru

A coiled bushmaster (Lachesis muta), the largest viper in the Americas, lies in wait on the damp forest floor near Otorongo Expeditions Lodge in Quebrada Orán, Peru. Its bold diamond pattern blend seamlessly with leaf litter under the beam of a headlamp, revealing the raw power and cryptic beauty that have earned this region its title: Peru’s Bushmaster Capital. Photographed during a night herping expedition, this apex predator embodies the untamed heart of the Amazon.

It has only dawned on me recently, The Prophecy that came to be.

Years ago when processing legal title for my slice of Amazonian paradise, The official asked “What will the name of your fundo be? ( property )

I thought Quick, maybe Otorongo? nah lets name it Fundo Shushupe!

Shushupe just so happens to be the local name for the worlds largest venomous viper the Bushmaster (Lachesis muta).

Even though I hadn’t observed a Bushmaster, and wont for another 7 years, I thought the name Shushupe was pretty awesome, so it was set in ink.

Here we are 15 years later and my property has become THE bushmaster capital of Peru with several sightings per week when actively searched for.
